Leiston is one of the many historically influencing towns that Suffolk has to offer, with the town largely being a manufacturing town during the late 19th and early 20th century, the town boasts the fact that it was the first to implement a flow assembly line for its production of portable steam engines.

Although, not only in manufacturing did the town of Leiston have an impact, but its history extended to the progressive educational system of which Alexander Sutherland Neill established in the early 1920's and brought to Leiston. Neill's schooling system built upon the existing boarding school ideology, but combined it with a democratic system employed which allowed its students and staff alike an equal vote in deciding how the school was run, and giving students the freedom to attend the classes they wanted to. This system has since been adopted internationally in America and continues to run from its origin in the town of Leiston. From these two historical facts alone, it's clear to see that the small town of Leiston has had a significant role in the progression of both manufacturing and schooling.
